Homosexuality IS a Choice

People today commonly believe that homosexuality is unavoidable for homosexuals. This page proves logically that homosexuality IS a choice.

Many people believe it is in the best interest of homosexuals and similar groups if so-called “sexual orientation” is determined by biology rather than by personal choice. In rational societies, individuals are not held accountable "immutable characteristics", such as the race into which they are born, or any birth defects which they might inherit. Similarly, if sexual activities are outside of personal control, then a basic sense of fairness would shield those involved in same-sex sexual activities as people who are just “born this way”.

A brief but excellent piece of writing on this subject can be found on the “Biology and Sexual Orientation” page of Wikipedia.Org, under the heading “Political Aspects” (this link will open in a new window).

Nevertheless, Christianity does NOT accept homosexuality. Christians are often aware of the story of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha in Genesis 18:16-19:29; the relevant Mosaic Law, found in Leviticus 18:22 and Leviticus 20:13; and the first chapter of Romans, particularly Romans 1:26-27. Two lesser known Biblical passages are Judges 19:22-24 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

The following verse is typical:

Leviticus 20:13

“13 And a man who lays down a male in a woman’s place to lay, they acted abominably. Kill both; they will die, their blood on them.”

Since Christianity rejects homosexuality, anything that leads to greater societal acceptance of homosexuals necessarily leads to a greater societal rejection of Christianity. For this reason, the question of whether or not homosexuality is a choice is important to the Christian community.

Biblical Proof that Homosexuality is a Choice

For Christians, it should be enough to simply note that God always provides an “escape” from sin:

1 Corinthians 10:13

“13 You will not have gotten a test if an unbelieving person; but God, He will not be leaving you to be tested beyond what you are able, but will be making together the test and the escape, that you be empowered to endure.”

This verse tells us that intentional sin is avoidable: there is an “escape” for every “test” we face in life. Thus, based on this verse, homosexuality IS a choice.

Logical Proof that Homosexuality is a Choice

There is another way to see that homosexuality is a choice, based on simple logic. First, we need to clarify what it means to be a homosexual.

Some groups, hoping to increase the number of people identified as homosexuals (and thereby increase the influence of homosexuals in society), have given a twisted interpretation of Matthew 5:27-28.

Matthew 5:27-28

“27 You hear that it was declared to the ancients, ‘you will not commit adultery’.

28 However, I say to you that everyone looking at a woman to desire her already commits adultery with her in his heart.”

Some dishonest people have claimed that this Bible passage condemns an individual for simply having sexual “imagery” in his or her mind. This is simply not true. What this passage really tells us is that desiring to sin is a sin: simply wanting to disobey God is disobedience.

A person is not a homosexual simply because he or she has some “image” of homosexuality that comes to mind when hearing or reading the word “homosexual”.

In the field of cognitive linguistics, the image that comes into a person’s mind upon encountering a word is known as the “prototypical image” of that word; so the image that comes into a person’s mind upon encountering the word “homosexual” is simply that person’s prototypical image of homosexuality.

It is no more of a sin to have such an image for the word “homosexual” than to have an image for the word “tree” or “house” or “blue”. Without the prototype images each of us have in our minds, we would not be able to recognize anything.

In fact, a person is involved in the sin of homosexuality only if they want to engage in homosexual activity. As with the Matthew 5:27-28 perspective on adultery, it is a person’s desire to engage in homosexual relations that makes the person guilty of sin, regardless of whether or not the person is actually able to participate in those relations.

With this greater clarity regarding homosexuality, let us return to the question of whether or not people choose to be homosexuals.

Proof that Homosexuality is a Choice (by Cases):

By analogy with Matthew 5:27-28, homosexuality is composed of

  1. imagining homosexual relations; and
  2. participating in homosexual relations.

1.) Suppose a person does not actually participate in homosexual relations, but is limited to only imagining himself / herself in homosexual relations. Logically, either the person chooses to have these homosexual imaginings, or not.

  • If the person chooses to have these homosexual imaginings, then the person is clearly a homosexual by choice.
  • However, if the person does not choose to have these homosexual imaginings, then the person lacks a desire for these homosexual imaginings. Lacking this desire, these imaginings neither make the person a homosexual, nor guilty of sin; the person is a victim of these thoughts, much like someone who has a bad dream.

So, with regards to homosexual imaginings, being a homosexual IS a choice.

2.) Suppose a person actually participates in homosexual relations. Logically, either the person chooses to participate in the homosexual relations, or not.

  • If the person chooses to participate in these homosexual relations, then the person is clearly a homosexual by choice.
  • However, if the person does not choose to participate in these homosexual relations, then the person lacks a desire to engage in these homosexual relations. Lacking this desire, these homosexual relations neither make the person a homosexual, nor guilty of sin; the person is a rape victim. Analogous to a woman that is raped by a man (Deuteronomy 22:25-27), it is only the rapist that has sinned.

So, with regards to homosexual relations, being a homosexual IS a choice.

This exhausts the cases.

Q.E.D.

(Note: "Quod Es Demonstradum" is Latin for "It Is Demonstrated"; this is traditionally included at the end of mathematical proofs.)

So homosexuality IS a choice.

Of course, everyone knows that biology can make poor choices more tempting for some people. For example, some individuals have metabolic problems that make them feel hungry much more often than most other people; and for them, there is a greater temptation to overeat.

Nevertheless, the overeater does choose to be an overeater: the person is not being force-fed. Likewise, the homosexual does choose to be a homosexual.

Homosexuality IS a choice; and homosexuals are accountable for their homosexuality.
